Tax Consideration
A Potential Federal Tax Benefit
Under Section 280A(g) of the Internal Revenue Code, homeowners who rent their primary or secondary residence for 14 days or fewer per year are generally not required to report that rental income on their federal tax return. The income is excluded entirely from gross income.
Because the Sundance Film Festival typically runs for approximately 10 days, many homeowners who rent their property for the duration of the festival may qualify for this exclusion—meaning the rental income could be completely tax-free at the federal level.
